Dr. Cinthi Pillai is passionate about quality patient care and expanding access to Neuro-ophthalmology. She has 18+ years of experience in outpatient, inpatient and telemedicine settings.
Her connection with visual neuroscience began in college as a student at New York University where she majored in Neural Science and was selected to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Torsten N. Wiesel, Nobel Laureate, and Dr. Judith Hirsch at Rockefeller University. She then completed her medical degree at Newcastle University in England where she completed an in-depth analysis of the structure, strengths and weaknesses of public vs private health care systems. This sparked her passion for expanding access to subspecialty Neuro-ophthalmology care.
Dr. Pillai completed her Neurology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center where she gained extensive experience working with diverse and underserved populations. She subsequently completed a Neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at Harvard Medical School - Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Prior to starting ACCESS NEURO-OP, she was a key faculty member at New York University Langone School of Medicine for over 7 years. While there, she was a core contributor to the team that brought the Neurology Department to #1 in the USA (Best Hospitals for Neurology & Neurosurgery US News Ranking 2022, 2023, 2024).
Dr. Pillai has designed and conducted numerous clinical trials, published and lectured. She is thankful to have had the mentorship of world leaders in Neuro-ophthalmology and related fields throughout her career. On a personal level, Dr. Pillai faced a critical illness and understands firsthand the experience of being a patient as well as the complexities of being a compassionate and comprehensive clinician.
There is a national shortage of Neuro-ophthalmology trained physicians and many patients can not travel to obtain evaluations. Our mission is to broaden patient access to Neuro-ophthalmic care - where you need it, when you need it.
Neuro-ophthalmologists evaluate visual symptoms coming from the optic nerve or visual pathways in the brain, and eye movement abnormalities. This can often involve multi-specialty care including Neurologists, Ophthalmologists, Rheumatologists, Endocrinologists, Dermatologists, and Neurosurgeons.
The patient must be in one of the following states at the time of video consultation:
Please reach us at info@accessneuroop.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Great question! If you have the ability to see an in-person Neuro-ophthalmologist – you should. There is a national shortage of Neuro-ophthalmologists – with many patients having to wait over six months and traveling long distances to obtain subspecialty care, and many scenarios where patients have to forego subspecialty care altogether. The aim of ACCESS NEURO-OP is to provide subspecialty care to patients who are unable to physically see (for any reason) a Neuro-ophthalmologist.
You should see an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist prior to your initial Neuro-Ophthalmology video visit. Many aspects of the exam overlap and your records will be reviewed in detail. A limited exam will also be conducted during your video visit.
We request that your medical records be sent to our office at least 2 business days prior to your appointment. This often includes:
▪ ACCESS NEURO-OP does not participate in commercial insurance.
▪ Every insurance plan has its own often changing policies and rules regarding physician reimbursement. Plan coverage varies between policies and this is often managed by multiple billing specialists at hospitals and practices. Dr. Pillai is a solo practitioner and navigates significant complexities to be able to practice in multiple states, as medical licensure and practice requirements are unique to each state. Our focus is on increasing and improving patient access to Neuro-ophthalmic care. We are not able to maintain our standards of care and mission within current commercial insurance policies.
▪ Some commercial insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits and might reimburse you for part of the visit cost. You should contact your insurance plan to find out if this is an option for you.
Our practice provides a full 1 hour consultation for all initial visits and comprehensive review of records, tests, imaging and coordination of care.
Current out of network reimbursement rates in the USA for initial outpatient consultations (CPT 99205) range from $600 to over $1000. (www.farihealthconsumer.org). As we aim to maintain accessibility:
▪ Initial 60 minute Video Neuro-ophthalmology Consultations are $680
▪ Follow-up 30 minute Video Neuro-ophthalmology Visits are $340
Payment in full is due 24 hours prior to your scheduled visit. Payment is accepted via credit card, Venmo or Zelle.
Please note that Dr. Pillai does NOT prescribe controlled substances.
